Netflix App Fitness Integration - Concept

Creating an Experience
Fitness features were integrated into the Netflix smart TV and smartphone apps to promote a healthy lifestyle. The app integration concept encourages users to exercise while watching Netflix, and allows them to connect their wearable fitness monitoring devices to Netflix through either the TV and smartphone apps, where they can view their progress.

Problem
The challenge of this project was to add a new functionality to Netflix, an existing digital product.

Goal
Promote a healthy lifestyle through the Netflix app

Discovery:

1. Ideation
Brainstorming of possible ways to integrate healthy living features to the existing Netflix television app.

2. Refined Problem
How can we integrate a fitness feature to the app in order for users to be able to watch Netflix simultaneously while being guided through a fitness program? How can we further incentivize them to exercise while watching Netflix?

User Statement
“As an active Netflix user, I want to be able to exercise while I watch Netflix in order to be entertained while being active and taking care of my health.”

Television App: Select and play a show in tandem with a workout.

Solution:

Fitness devices such as Fitbit watches and smartwatches can now be connected to Netflix, where users can see their progress over time.
A fitness section was added to Netflix, where users can select workouts based on type, length, and intensity.
Users can create their own “My Fitness List”, similarly to the already existing “My List” feature.
Once a workout is selected, users are asked if they would like to watch a show or movie in tandem with their workout. Similarly, when users select a show or movie, they are asked if they would like to select a workout to watch at the same time.
Workouts can be viewed full screen, or in tandem with a show or movie in the bottom corner of the screen.
Tandem views can be a video, silhouettes, or text only for users who are familiar with the exercises. Silhouettes and text exercises will be presented prior to starting in order to familiarize users with the upcoming routine.
If a workout ends prior to the end of a show or movie, the next workout video will begin. Users have ten second to exit workouts prior to its start.
If a show or movie ends prior to the end of a workout, users can choose to start the next episode of a show, or continue the workout on its own.
